Government secrecy is surging, and public access to information is disappearing. Since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, federal agencies have deleted data, shut down Freedom of Information Act offices, taken records offline, and fired watchdogs. When the public cannot see what its government is doing, democracy suffers.

Journalists are responding. Some newsrooms are making reporting based on public records free to everyone or removing paywalls and other barriers. How can we make this the future of investigative journalism?
